The Republic of Moldova marks another important step in the development of green energy: in April, 36% of the country’s total electricity consumption was covered by locally produced renewable sources. This performance represents an all-time record and a significant increase compared to March, when the share of locally produced green energy was approximately 23%.

According to available data, the total installed capacity of power plants using renewable sources exceeded 665 MW in April, and over the past four years, the capacities of renewable energy-based plants have increased eightfold.

This positive trend highlights the growing potential of renewable energy sources and underscores the importance of strengthening strategic investments in this field.

At the same time, these results reflect the significant contribution of prosumers—households and companies that have installed photovoltaic panels under net metering and billing mechanisms—as well as eligible producers who benefit from support schemes such as fixed tariffs for producers.

It is worth noting that April is, from a climatic standpoint, a favorable month for renewable energy production—moderate temperatures contribute to higher efficiency of photovoltaic plants compared to the summer months. The annual average share of consumption covered by renewable sources in 2025 is estimated to exceed 20%, since winter months are less favorable due to weather conditions. Last year, the share of electricity from renewable sources reached 16.7% of total energy consumption, compared to 9.2% in 2023 and only 3.1% in 2020.

The Republic of Moldova remains committed to increasing the share of renewables in the national energy mix to 30% by 2030, in line with the objectives set under European energy policies.

To support this process, the Ministry of Energy is actively promoting the development of new renewable energy production capacities. In 2024, tenders were launched for the construction of photovoltaic and wind farms with a total capacity of 165 MW, which are expected to attract investments of approximately 200 million euros. In the near future, financial offers will be analyzed and the tender winners will be announced, while the status of large eligible producers is to be approved by a Government decision.

Moreover, a second round of tenders is planned for October 2025, which will also include solutions for electricity storage using batteries, thereby contributing to the stability and flexibility of the energy grid. Offers are to be submitted by March 2026.
